Also, Malaysia is very well represented in the Australian society, as more than 130,000 Australian persons are of Malaysian descent.
What are the visa options for seasonal employment in Australia?
Malay nationals can relocate for seasonal or skilled employment (skilled employment is generally made available for long-term or permanent relocation). For seasonal employment, one can relocate to Australia from Malaysia as a part of the work holiday program.
This program allows foreigners to arrive here for a limited amount of time and work for several months, participate in training or other types of classes and visit Australia. For Malay nationals, the program can be accessed 3 times (in 3 different years). The specifics of the program are:
- residency in Australia is issued for a period of maximum of 12 months;
- it is addressed to nationals who have an age of 18 to 30 years old;
- there is a processing fee, charged for each application (AUD 650);
- for those who apply for the 2nd time, it is necessary to have completed specific types of work activities for at least 3 months under the 1st work holiday visa, while for the 3rd time applicants, 6 months are required;
- it is also possible to apply for the 2nd or 3rd visa while being in Australia, in a maximum of 28 days from the expiry date of the previous visa.
Of course, there are other visas for seasonal/temporary employment, but they are not specifically made for Malay nationals, as they can be obtained by any foreign national, as long as the requirements are met. Our Australia migration lawyer can present other visas designed for employment.
Visas for skilled employment in Australia
Immigration in Australia for employment purposes also covers skilled work opportunities. In fact, many visas issued by the Australian authorities aim at skilled employment, considering that Australia has a developed economy and an educated workforce.
A person can apply for skilled employment under a variety of visas, such as: Subclass 494, Subclass 189, Subclass 190, Subclass 491, Subclass 887 and many others. These visas are available for persons who move to Australia from Malaysia, as well as for other foreign nationals.
According to the data of the Australian Parliament, the interest of Malay nationals for skilled employment in Australia has steadily risen since 2002 onwards. Many of the Malay nationals opt for skilled professions such as: doctors, engineers, accountants, architects, ICT specialists, advertising professionals, etc.
Those who relocate here for skilled employment have the possibility of becoming permanent residents. They also have the right to apply for Australian citizenship, but for this, they need to renounce their Malay nationality.
This is not due to the law on immigration in Australia, but rather due to the Malay legislation, which does not recognize dual nationality.
